World of Warcraft: Lower Bracket Roundup

By: Aaron M. Wall - Published August 04, 2007 at 4:54 AM EDT - Writer Archive
Asian team D E R Tenacity and North American Team EG managed to come back from early falters to remain in the tournament and make it to the top 4.

It's common for matches in a tournament's Lower Bracket to be overlooked, but it's often where players become the most desperate and hungry to survive. It's where Team EG has found it's confidence, and where D E R Tenacity has lived up to its name.

Team EG had mentally prepared themselves for a sure push past Nashwan to play mYm, the team they felt most threatened by. That carpet was pulled out from under them early in the Upper Bracket, but it did leave them with the face off against mYm.

EG pulled through the first game with the heavy use of Bloodlusted Mana Burns. They had worked out ahead of time how Spinister and Tiz would lock down mYm's damage classes, buying their Priest time to play offensively and empty the other team's mana. mYm responds very quickly after seeing a strategy, however.

Game 2 opened on Blade's Edge, both teams cautiously dancing back and forth on the bridge. Both team's Warriors met in the middle briefly, trading a few swats before breaking off. Warlock pets soon became the targets though little headway was made until EG finally pushed forward.

Things went badly for EG soon after the start. After trading blows back and forth, EG's Koorban was able to work in Mana Burns though at a high price. Nuvas died early, leaving his team with the demoralizing feeling of the all important first death in a 5v5.

EG rallied however and managed to finish their first target, mYm's Warlock Akina. Though they had kept up all 5 players initially, mYm was running on no mana at this point. EG's joy of evening the score would be taken away shortly afterwards as Tiz fell to the continued pressure of Prophet, the mYm Warrior.

Now in a 3v4 situation, EG had to scramble to keep the mYm healers from slipping away from the fight to drink back their mana. The moves worked, Valsing the Paladin's mana held for EG, and they evened up the score to a 3v3.

EG had their Warrior, Holy Priest and Paladin. mYm had their Warrior, Restoration Shaman and Paladin.

If you follow the 3v3 format much, you know that the Warrior/Priest/Paladin team is very universally strong but is simply outclassed against the higher damage and armor of the Warrior/Shaman/Paladin team. The strength of a Priest's Mana Burn is tough to work in because the Priest becomes the pressured target.

Even after leveling the score, EG was still at the disadvantage. The fight began to drag on. Koorban was requiring constant healing and Paladin blessing attention. Spinister had to begin dropping pressure opportunities to keep both mYm healers in combat to deny drinking. Timers such as Blessings of Protection, Shadow Fiends and Mana Tide totems refreshed and were used a second time.

Eventually the mana ran dry and Koorban fell. A Warrior with Windfury runs any healer out of mana given enough time.

The fight seemed mostly over until about half a minute later when Spinister and Valsing managed to coordinate a kill with Blood Elf Paladin CC's on the mYm Shaman Peech. Suddenly the fight turned into a Warrior/Paladin 2v2 mirror match.

Both teams began rapidly juggling Paladin shields and other timers trying to work in chances to drink their way back into the fight. There was kiting. There was straight up tanking as Paladins took maces to the face. It was what you would expect from a classic Warrior/Paladin 2v2 match up.

Eventually EG ran the mYm's Paladin Mackelina out of tricks and worked in a combination of CC's that let them seal the deal. Prophet followed soon after.

The game was impressive because you rarely see a game that lasts for so long, nearly 15 minutes in this case. It also showed that while comebacks are rare in WoW, they can happen. Viewers also were able to see several minutes of each Arena format (5v5, 3v3 and 2v2) in full detail. You could easily make out the dynamics of each matchup as they played out.
