Team Fortress 2: CEVO Pro TF2 Season 1 Preview

By: Joe Szymkowicz - Published January 14, 2008 at 12:46 AM EST - Writer Archive
In it's inaugural season, the CEVO Pro Team Fortress 2 league looks to be full of some intense matches and lots of surprises as the communities top team faceoff for $3,500.

20ID
After winning the TGL Roughneck Challenge, 20ID is coming into CEVOp with an awful lot of bragging rights but also a giant target on their back. Overall though, this is one of my favorite teams to watch play. Their in-game creativity and great teamwork make them a very special group and really set this team apart from many out there. With a very talented starting roster of motard, vane, kaybee, ginc, hubris and xerxes it's not hard to see how this team accomplished some of the things they did during the Roughneck Challenge. But now it's time for them to show everyone that they aren't just a one-trick pony and continue their success into the CEVO season. I do expect them to be very successful during the Regular season, on into the playoffs.

50 Calibre
When I think of 50Cal I can only think of one word; "meh". Though they have some decently well-known names like "mik3d" and "Micahwave", I'm afraid it doesn't mean much here. With a relatively easy way through the Placement tournament, 50Cal's only challenge in competitive play has come from The Experiment in the TGL tournament, in a match they would ultimately lose. Though I really don't see 50 Calibre as one of the top teams in the tournaments, they are by no way close to the worst. We can expect them to be a "middle of the road" team and make it into playoffs, but the goal of the Semi or Grand Finals might be a bit far fetched.

Adrenaline Gamer
Though I was disappointed to not see Adrenaline Gamer in the original list of teams, they are here now as a replacement to Devastation, who disbanded shortly before the Pre-season. I'm actually really glad these guys came out to play, as I was very impressed with their performances in the previous CEVO and TGL tournaments. Their wins over Nurfed and Comedy Option in the CEVO tournament were a thing of beauty and their run through the TGL brackets were simply stunning. Though they would lose to TGL runner-up The Experiment in the Semi-Finals, it was really a close game and one I wouldn't mind seeing played again soon in this competition. And though I think they are starting out just outside of my picks as a top-4 team, I do think they may be able to upset some big names during the season. Keep an eye on these guys.

elite-pimps
Probably the weakest team in the competition, Elite-Pimps have replaced 407 Death Clan as the new butt of every joke in the community. Come regular season, this team will become the official BYE win for each of their opponents. I really think CEVO is making a mistake by promoting this team to the Professional division, but I guess they'll see that as soon as regular play begins. Theres no Ifs, Ands or Buts about it; elite-pimps will be defecated on more than a hooker in German porn.

makeSHIFT Gaming
The former Strictly Business team is a group who seem to have quite an impressive lineup yet only mildly impressive performances. Though not as high profiled or outspoken as teams like The Doctors or 20ID, makeSHIFT seem to be just as talented of a group. Having a relatively short TGL Roughneck tournament, losing to tournament champions 20ID, they still played very well. Also, despite beating mediocre teams like Revelation and Pure Gaming to get into the Professional division, I still think they have showed that they want and deserve to be here. I really think they could turn out to be a dark horse in this season, given they keep up there practice regimen and keep their players focused.

MugNMouse
If a legitimate organization decides to pickup a low-skilled team, it doesn't make that team any better. After an easy walk through the better part of the TGL competition and beating some pretty awful teams like Lossless Gaming and Darkside, I guess Dorks With Tranquilizers looked like a pretty attractive pickup for MugNMouse. On the contrary though, this team team is far from top-4 of this field and will find themselves struggling through much of this tournament. It doesn't seem like there is a problem with teamwork or communication with this group, it's simply that they they're not as skilled as their competitors. Maybe on down the road they will be able to compete with the best, but for this season they will have a hard time with even the moderately skilled teams like Relentless Assault and 50Cal.
