Can someone provide a step by step (or frame by frame) guide for doing the flick rocket jump that the pros use? You know, the sort of fast low trajectory rocket jump that soldiers like Reptile or blackstar use?
I find it very easy to rocket jump up and down, but I can't seem to nail the flick jump every time.
it just takes some practice, you've seen the movements they use, all you have to do is practice to replicate
add this to your autoexec bind "k" "sv_cheats 1;give item_ammopack_full" ----- "k" can be changed to w/e you like this will start sv cheats, and give you full ammo each time you press it
there is no god mode in tf2, however there is a workaround i haven't found a way to bind this to a key yet, but type
ent_fire !self addoutput "health 9999999"
in console with sv_cheats on and you'll have unlimited health
And don't forget to crouch. It's just repetition, the more you do it the easier the flick-jump gets. What I find tough is doing it both ways - I can only really nail the timing if I go back-right, but I see Soldiers now going both right and left and.. well.. man that's different, lol.

The problem is that I'm not positive which movements they use. I can replicate it sometimes, but it's mostly out of luck.
Can someone explain step by step (if only in a cursory way) how the rocket jump is performed? I see that you look to the bottom right. But when do you fire? Do you jump simultaneously or a moment after firing? Do you crouch and jump at the same time? etc.
I aim my rockets down/right depending on the angle i want and fire/crouch+jump at the same time
or just jump/no jump at all depending on what i'm doing at the time
I really can't give you anything better than that, I hate sounding like a broken record but its all time in front of the monitor, spend some time with the ent_fire cmd, and you'll have it down in no time.

I can rocket jump up down left right, just some practise in quake and how I do it is: Jump then shoot but like straight after eachother almost at the same time, like others said: just practise.
You get more distance if you release your grip on the forward and back buttons(W and S) and learn to control yourself midair with the strafe buttons (A and D)
why not jc, some people might be new to games that use rocket launchers and sticky bombs that launch you in the air.. what i usually do is look behind me and which ever way i want to.. jump, crouch and fire a rocket really fast [all one motion] and poof im off. For the best results you would probably want a running head start .. after all the years of quake etc, you just kind of know how to rocket jump well. but just practice it a lot, ull get better.
edit: ctf_bball would be an awesome map for you to practice your rocket jumping skills, theNoid is pretty good at that.. so if u ever see em maybe he can help u out
I can rocket jump up to the attic on well 99% of the time without hitting crouch. I've seen a lot of players mess that up using crouch. Imo, hitting crouch does not get you more height on the jump, but just like a jumping, a crouch can get you more height at the peak of your jump.
Also, crouching shouldn't effect the height you get off a rocket jump, because it would move you too far out of the peak splash damage of a rocket. I think crouching is simply a prefference, some people use it, some people don't, but I've never struggled to make any standard rocket jump to any location that other people do.
Most of my flick jumps don't involve crouch anyways because it's more about forward movement then height.. but I kinda have to agree, I've been playing TF games since Quake and crouch has always impoved things in terms of height. I don't want to say you're wrong, but maybe you're just special, Acid :)

Acidrenix I think they're talking about pressing crouch and jump at the same time as rocket... Not crouching after the jump. But if you mean you can get to attic on well without pressing crouch+jump+rocket at the same time you're nuts and wrong.
load up TFC and go play quad_rocket skill maps. After playing these for over 5 years... TF2 rocket jumping just comes naturally. Basically the same concept, with minor differences, but you learn rocket control, speed, angle, prediction and timing.
Rocket jump like the pros?

god
and lots of practice. Playing RA3 or CPMA CA probably helps too.

Create a .cfg file and put the ent_fire cmd in that klapdout.
Then just bind something to exec the .cfg :)
yea i have no idea how people rj from the left like that i could never do it ;D
its like attempting to write left handed for me
so that's how you do it! i tried so many configurations with quotes to get it on a bind lol
