Polish favorite av3k takes down reigning ESWC champion winz while underdog PURRI shocks forever. ![]()
PURRI had looked somewhat off the pace so far this event, losing poorly to winz and Cooller, but he put on one hell of a show when it mattered, taking down forever in three maps here. Each player's map choice went heavily in their favor with forever winning Placebo Effect 31-4 and PURRI returning the favor on Galang with a shocking 25-2 reverse leaving Torment as the decider. Under pressure to avoid an upset, forever took an early 3-0 lead on the map which, if you believe the rumors, he had never even practiced before. His lead was short-lived however and PURRI snatched back control and eased into the lead. With nine minutes left on the clock PURRI was 6-3 up and forever was visibly shaken, missing a number of jumps and looking in serious trouble. PURRI just kept attacking with the rocket launcher and with forever's item timing in disarray, the Swede extended his lead to 9-3. Forever began to settle down around the 10 minute mark and started to wrest back control, pulling the deficit back to 7-9. Two missed rocket jumps from forever slowed down his comeback and while at the time it seemed he had gone unpunished, the missed frags would later prove crucial. With just under four minutes left on the clock, forever drew level and slipped into the lead with some great rockets in the mega health corridor. The next few minutes were insanely tense and featured a number of tight close combat match-ups which left forever with a 12-10 lead but low on health and armor. The Dutch player attempted to slow down the pace with one minute left but PURRI would have none of it and in an incredible last ditch push managed to pull the game level. Forever was again denied a victory that was his for the taking and it was PURRI who started stronger in the resulting two minute overtime. PURRI edged into the lead, pulling off an impressive shotgun frag, and with the clock ticking down from 45 to 30 seconds forever attempted to lay one last trap, waiting at the top of a flight of stairs with the rocket launcher. The Swede soon appeared but it was forever who was caught out and another frag sealed the deal for PURRI, 14-12. Forever now needs to take down Cooller to progress while PURRI is in with a great chance of making it to the top four.
Winz had done well to make it this far after his hiatus from competitive Quake 4 but his flaws were ruthlessly exposed by an on-form av3k in this second group stage match-up. The opening map, Galang, was a total walkover with av3k up six to nothing after three minutes and winz reduced to sniping his opponent with the railgun. As expected, winz had a hard time adjusting his defensive style to combat av3k's aggressive play and the frags just kept coming as the French player was down 9-2 after five minutes. To be fair to winz, his aim was in good shape and while he was damaging his opponent, it was his inability to finish him off that left him so far behind. By the half way point it was 12-4 and the match slowed down as both players traded frags until the end. Winz's map choice, Torment, was somewhat closer and even saw the French player take an initial 2-0 lead. Like with forever, there were questions as to how much time av3k had spent on the new map Torment and it was clear winz was aiming to take advantage of his rivals' carelessness as it was not the first time he had picked it. Regardless however, individual skill won out in the end as av3k began to lock down the item timings and battle his way back from a 1-4 deficit. With map control firmly in his hands, av3k shot into an 8-4 lead and was fully stacked 200/200 with his French opponent on the run. Winz pulled some frags back but it was more of the same up to around the 12 minute mark. Things then began to slow down and with the result seemingly not in question, the players played out the remaining minutes trading frags to leave it at 16-10 in favor of av3k. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
