ESWC 2007 kicks off at the Parc des Expositions de la Porte de Versailles in Paris, France this weekend with some of the world's finest Quake players in attendance.
The weather in Paris may be wet and windy but the players here have more important matters on their mind as they prepare for one of the most prestigious tournaments of the year. With $19,000 and a place in Quake history on offer, this year's ESWC Quake 4 tournament is shaping up to be another cracking event. The lineup, although lacking a certain Swede, is an intriguing mix of youth and experience with the likes of former ESWC champions Cooller and Winz looking to prove they have what it takes to compete with today's newest stars.
The first group stage will feature four groups of six players from which the top two will progress to the next round. Matches get started on Thursday the 5th of July and play will continue throughout the day. A best-of-three map format will be used throughout the tournament with maps chosen from the updated ESWC map list which now includes Torment as well as the controversial Galang.
Day one highlights include forever versus k1llsen in group B and hot favorite av3k versus local star Falcuma in group A. Probably the most anticipated group match will take place on day two however, as former ESWC champion Cooller takes on GaRpY in a rematch of their recent WSVG match-up. GaRpY won 2-1 in Louisville but went on to finish below Cooller so both players will have motivation to take the rematch.
