Day Of Defeat: CAL-M Season XII Player of the Week

By: James W - Published January 24, 2006 at 8:13 PM EST - Writer Archive
Read on to see the Player of the Week, knubbe, get interviewed by James!

With the middle of the season coming to an end, the top teams have already started to emerge, and the top teams have already been pick out of the litter. The one thing people haven't been thinking much about are the individual players who have been grinding their gears so their teams can win, clinch playoff spots, and high seeds. This week, a fairly familiar face, has brought himself some attention. He is knubbe.ca from team covenant. He is currently cov's starting sniper, and has been in that position since the start of this season; he plays smart, thinks ahead, and has lots of in game skill. I was able to catch up with Paul "Knubbee" Vanderberg and ask him some questions about DoD, and gaming in general.

James) First off tell us a little bit about yourself, gaming career, real life activities and a little bit about yourself.

James) Cov has been a strong team since last season, entering the cal-im playoffs with a very strong record. What makes cov such a strong team?

Knubbee)well, all of the guys on the team except explodey are from Edmonton or calgary so they all basically knew each other. it was just random that I joined them and it turned out they were all in the same city. i guess you could say the team is "strong" because they know each other so our communication is decent and each player brings something different to the table in terms of skill, experience, etc. we just mesh well

James) Most teams have things they wish to improve on. Do you see any major problems with the team right now?

Knubbee) well, after week 4 (FF loss to Nihilist), we restructured the team and got people back playing DoD again. the team now is me, dullumis, explodey, disco stu, blaine, up2, flyingman, and gino. the starting 6 for any given week is up in the air since we are all pretty busy, so I guess the problem we face is getting a consistent 6 to scrim and practice with.

James) Dod at CPL summer 2006 has been brought up many times, but usually it has been filled with comments of "dod is dead" "lol gl with that buddy" and other comments. Do you think that DoD has a chance at this coming CPL?

Knubbee) Well, considering the guys already in the clan went to summer and played, the team keeps a pretty positive attitude regarding dod and its future. we dont nesscarily care if CPL decides to pick it up, but it would nice. Props to bewton for trying his hardest to get stuff organized and those interested for staying positive regarding the whole process. for those who say "dod is dead', its their opinion, but CAL hasnt gone any where and there are still quite a few decent teams playing the game. Sure it isnt the level it used to be, but if CPL picks the game up, watch the community slowly come back to life. I think alot of people keep coming back to the game regardless of the status of the community because frankly, Source isnt that great and there really isnt any other games out there that are as fun and interesting as DoD.

James) If DoD actually dose come to its death, what are your future plans game and real life wise?

Knubbee) I'll just keep playing it for fun with whatever team will have me. It's what I do now, so I'll probably continue doing so unless something better comes along or my schedule changes drastically.

James) Obviously a question I was bound to ask is; do you think Day of Defeat source has a chance, or do you think that the competitive mod by gloin's dev team will work out?

Knubbee) I (and lots of other people too) could rant all day regarding Source but I wont. I personally dont like it in its current state, and honestly havent had a chance to play DoD:C yet, so I cant give a opinion on that. It just doesnt appeal to me the way 1.3 does.

James) How do you think covenant will manage to do this season, record wise?

Knubbee)umm, well depending on how we do with our new lineup and what teams we get scheduled against, hopefully we can manage a .500 or better record at a minimum. Ideally, we want to make playoffs with a good seed, but you never know what is gonna happen. We can only do our best to prepare each week

James) Well that's about all I have to ask you, anything you would like to
say, or any shout-outs?

Knubbee) umm, lol i guess to everyone on covenant, and anyone from any past
teams
